BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA | MARCH 3, 2020
Bowie State University (BSU) and the Maryland Economic Development Corporation (MEDCO) have selected COCM (Capstone On-Campus Management), a Birmingham, Alabama based student housing firm, to manage their new 557-bed on-campus residence hall. The new facility will contain a mix of suites and semi-suites for Bowie State students and will also house BSU’s newly created entrepreneurship program. COCM is excited to partner with Bowie State to manage this exciting, vibrant mixed-use development at the campus edge that will attract students, entrepreneurs, small businesses and the larger community to the campus, Prince George’s County, and the region.
The new living-learning facility, being developed by Balfour Beatty Campus Solutions, will provide a hub for services and support systems to spur idea creation and small business development while supporting the residential needs of students enrolled at the University. The project is intended to facilitate intellectual exchange, promote social interaction, generate innovative ideas, and serve as a living laboratory for the growth of entrepreneurship.
When the new community opens in Summer 2021, COCM will work with Bowie State under a shared governance management arrangement where the University will provide Residence Life services and COCM will manage operational aspects of the community including maintenance, leasing and marketing, financial reporting, and custodial services.
Established in 1865, BSU is the oldest of the four Historically Black Institutions (“HBIs”) of higher education in the State of Maryland and the fifth oldest in the nation.
